How To Find A Qualified Baby Sign Language Expert

I’ve shared my dislike of many “baby sign language” resources available for purchase, as the publishers and authors are not always actually fluent in ASL or have any background within the Deaf community.

So… how do you find a true expert?!

If you don’t already, please follow me on Instagram for more about how sign language can be a game charger for your baby / toddler’s early communication skills.

Vet the baby sign language expert or company using the following guidelines:

  1. Formal background in sign language.

This is NOT someone who learned it for their own baby, or just took ASL 1, but actually learned it from the Deaf in a formal school setting or by Deaf family members.

  2. Has a degree or certification in a Deaf-related field.

A speech language pathologist doesn’t usually have a specialty in sign language, and while they may know some signs, you’ll want to check into point #1 above

  3. Incorporates strategies, techniques, and your child’s development into the resources.

To be successful, you need more than just single-word vocabulary!

  4. Creates & recommends resources that will being value to your sign language journey.

You don’t want anything to add more confusion and overwhelm! This isn’t possible unless they’re a true expert.
