Will Sign Language Delay My Child’s Speech?

Wondering whether teaching your baby or toddler sign language will hinder or delay their speech is a common question, fear, and concern for many parents before choosing whether or not they want to teach their child.

And I get it! After all, many baby registry checklists recommend containers, gear, and accessories that occupational and physical therapists do not recommend because of their potential negative impact on development. There is so much noise to sift through as parents.

Baby Sign Language Research Studies

Just as these therapists have research studies to support their strong recommendations to ditch the baby walkers, flat head pillows, and the like, there are also research studies about the impact of sign language on spoken language development.

A study conducted by Goodwyn, Acredolo, & Brown (2000) supported previous research and case studies that using gestures and sign language with hearing children does not negatively impact the development of spoken language. In fact, there was evidence that it may actually facilitate and support spoken language development.

Breathe that sigh of relief, and know that signing with your baby or toddler will NOT negatively impact their speech and language development.

However, if you do suspect that your child has a speech or language delay of any kind, please seek the guidance of your child’s healthcare team and seek an evaluation from a therapist.
